Local Golfer Charlie Danielson Qualifies for PGA Tour Event

As a high school golf coach, I get the opportunity to meet up with a lot of really cool people in the golf world. Last fall Duane Jourdeans, Craig Danielson and I set up a golf session with Charlie Danielson & Jordan Niebrugge out at New Richmond Golf Club. A chance for them to show junior golfers how to properly train, prepare & be mentally tough golfers.

This interview was AWESOME at the time and the guys absolutely crushed it. Here is one clip from the session. I thought you all would like to see it again now with Danielson's recent success as he Monday Qualified for the Valspar Championship.

Check out the video here originally posted by

Thanks for checking out this post and be sure to keep following Charlie & Jordan as they have a very bright future in golf.

Your Full Swing Needs Help...

...Here is your FIX:

We posted a poll on twitter asking which area of your game needed the most help. The choices were: Putting, Chipping, Pitching, & Full Swing. The most common area of struggle for our clients was the full swing.

Here is our favorite full swing fix. This fix has been the most helpful for clients, from junior golfers up to adult and senior citizen golfers. We use it personally in our own games and teach it to all of our clients. It will take you from those inconsistent strikes / days, to striking it PURE every time.

We call it the "Pure It" Drill:

1) Go to your local driving range and purchase a bucket of balls
2) If you have an alignment aid, lay it out on your target line
3) Take out a mid iron (6,7, or 8)
4) Roll out your first ball
5) Set up with a standard ball position (Feet shoulder with apart and ball in the middle of your stance)
6) Roll the ball about 6 inches forward towards your front foot (foot closest to your target)
7) Place the club head back to the middle of your stance as normal (so the club should be in normal/middle of your stance position, but the ball is about 6 inches forward towards your front foot)
8) Make a swing
9) You probably hit it really poorly
10) Repeat 3x (It is really hard to do at first)
11) After the 3rd try, you probably had a little better result
12) On the 4th shot, go back to your normal/middle ball position and swing (Most likely you will pure this one)
13) Try to PURE IT 2x in a row
14) Repeat the drill again, hitting 3 shots forward (more challenging) and then 2 shots normal (less challenging)
15) Do this drill at least 3x (15 shots total)

To summarize, the idea is that the ball being forward is a bit more difficult and will overemphasize any swing flaws. You will be forced to adjust to hit the ball cleanly. It's kind of like using a medicine ball and then throwing a regular basketball, it seems a lot easier after using a heavy medicine ball.

This "PURE IT" drill is a great one to go back to anytime your ball striking or consistency with your full swing is giving you trouble.

We hope it helps and please let us know if your game improves as a result of using this drill. The crazy thing for me at times, is that I will hit the ball better when it is forward 6 inches than I do standard. It is a great drill and the feel of getting through the ball to strike it cleanly will bring quick results to your game. It is also something that you can work into your pre-shot routine while you are on the course.

For more help on grip, alignment, stance, posture, mental approach, game-improving drills and pre-shot routine:

The Masters: 3 Things You Can Apply Today

The greatest sporting event of the year is over, but now we (beginner, average, above average golfers) get to go to our own area courses and work to beat our personal records. Here are 3 things that the players at the Masters did that you can do too:

1) They spent time on the Driving Range & Short Game area before their round.

How often do we get to the course and just rush to the first tee? I know I am guilty of it way too often. If I am lucky some days, I might roll a few putts and hit a few chips, but then it is off to play.

This year: Make a commitment to spend 30 minutes before your round with deliberate practice (both a little driving range & a little short game work), before you tee off.

2) They have a Caddy, a Swing Coach & Mental Game Coach

Now most of us are not going to have the luxury of those 3 people following us around the course, and probably are glad we don't. Our golf buddies would never let us live it down if we brought a Tiger-like entourage to our next Saturday round. But we can play the role of all 3 ourselves.

This year: Make a commitment to play the game smarter (Be your own caddy), Commit to improve your swing (Study and coach yourself), Mental Game (Work to stay focused on each shot)

3) They have an incredible routine on the course - Example Jordan Spieth

On each shot the pros will start by looking at the next shot from behind the ball. They will visualize a target or a line they want the ball to end up on. Jordan Spieth talked about having small targets on each shot to help him really focus and aim small / miss small.

This year: Make a commitment to have a clear focus and target on each shot.

We hope these 3 tips help you play better. Please let us know 1 thing you learned from watching the pros at The Masters in the comments below.

If you would like help with your own game, we can show you how to be your own swing coach, caddy & mental game coach. This will bring confidence to your game, because GOLF IS CONFIDENCE!

Watch and Learn: Masters Coverage Online & TV

Here is how you can watch the greatest sporting event of the year. How about instead of just watching this year, we also try to learn from the pros? Try watching a specific group from one of the featured groups below to see how they approach the game. Try watching the coverage of the driving range and practice area to see how the pros prepare to play.  Or try watching how they tackle Amen Corner and holes 15-16 via the link below to see how different pros manage the course in various ways.

This year try to really focus on what and why they do what they do. Watch the coverage with a purpose: to use what the pros are doing and then apply what you can to your own game. Find 1-3 things that you can copy right now and start to work it into your own practice and play.

In the comments below, please share 1-3 things that you learned or picked up that will help us average golfers the next time we play.

Snedeker Wins Using a Mixed Bag

Brandt Snedeker's golf bag is proof that you don't need to have the latest equipment to play golf at a high level. He is using a TaylorMade driver that was introduced in 2010 and his Odyssey putter has been in his bag for over a decade. Another thing that I like about his bag is a mixture of top golf brands. He chooses the clubs that work best for him and sticks with them.

Here is what Snedeker used to win at Pebble:

Driver: TaylorMade Burner SuperFast 9.5 degrees
3-wood: Ping G25, 15 degrees
Hybrid: Ping Anser, 17 degrees
Irons (4-PW): Bridgestone J40
Wedges: Bridgestone J15 (52, 56 degrees); Titleist Vokey TVD K-Grind (60 degrees)
Putter: Odyssey White Hot XG Rossie

We recommend using name brands and can help you get fit for your unique needs and ability. The great thing about playing great clubs that are a few years old, is that you will save a bunch of money in comparison to the new retail clubs.

The Holen1Golf team wants to help you out. Tell us about your current golf set and golf game and we will work with you to improve in 2 areas: 1) Your Equipment & 2) Your Game

Play Golf Every Day: 3 Ways You Can Make It Happen!

"Golf is so popular simply because it is the best game in the world at which to be bad."
-A.A. Milne

What a great quote. Golf is the best game at which to be bad. It's true, golf is such a ridiculously hard game that it is amazing anyone plays it. Incredibly, over 61 million people have decided to not just play it, but to endure the pain and misery of 18 holes of the game...on purpose!! The game gets at something fundamental within us, we love a tough challenge! We can probably all agree that everyone is bad at golf. The tour pros are just a lot less bad than we are. One of the key teaching points at www.holen1golf.com is "Game Improvement = Your Bad Shots Are Less Bad!" This week we would like to show you 3 ways that you can be "less bad," by playing every day. These are 3 methods that I use personally, and now you can too:

Practice and Play for Free (Total Time: 15 mins - 1 Hour or more)
It is shocking to me to see the free part of the golf course sitting vacant at the course on most days. Many courses have a beautiful putting green and short game practice area, but you will often be hard pressed to find anyone there.  So do a little research, find the best practice green that is within a short car ride of you and start going 2-5x per week.
When you get there, spend 10-15 minutes practicing your putting and chipping. You can then make up an 18 hole putting game (par 2 for each hole, 36 total) and then play an 18 hole chip and putt game (par 2 for each hole, 36 total).  Once you finish spend another 10-15 minutes of practice and then head home. Track your scores week to week and watch your game improve!

Key 1: Get "Less Bad" by spending 2-5 days working on your chipping and putting. We believe that you will be amazed by the results you see.

Practice and Play for $5-10 (Total Time: 30 mins - 1 Hour or more)
Another part of the course that often goes underused is the driving range.  Why is this? Well apparently people really do enjoy being bad at golf.  If you want to start getting less bad, all you have to do is find the nearest driving range to your home. Find one that has several nice targets that you can use to work on distance control and accuracy.
When you get there, spend the first 10-15 minutes warming up, stretching and then loosen up with a few actual shots. Next, move into practice time where you work on areas you need to improve as well as developing your golfing strengths. Finally play a little bit. Pretend you are standing on the first tee of your favorite golf course, hit the club you would use. Did you hit the fairway? Next visualize yourself standing in the fairway trying to hit the green. Did you get it? Keep track of all the fairways that you were able to hit and all the greens you hit (golfers call this "Green In Regulation" or G.I.R). You can simulate 18 holes this way and track how many fairways you hit and how many greens you hit. If you track this you will start to see major gains, you are hitting more fairways and greens. Your improved game will then also start to show up on the actual course.

Key 2: Get "Less Bad" by spending 2-3x per week working on your pitching and full swing on the driving range. Make up a game to help you focus on hitting the fairways and greens.

Practice and Play at Home (Total Time: 15 mins - 1 Hour or more)
Once you really get hooked on practice, the world will never look the same. A mirror is no longer a mirror, instead it is a device to check your grip, stance, posture and swing. You won't be able to walk by one anymore without doing a few rehearsal swings in front of it. A ruler, yardstick or broom will never look the same to you again. You will turn them all into golf clubs and take a few practice swings.  Your front yard will no longer be just grass, but has now become the rough just off the fairway and you need to chip the ball on the green to try and save your par.
Make use of the time you have at home to develop your swing. You can work on all of the fundamentals right in your own driveway. The key fundamentals are Grip (How you hold the club), Alignment (How you aim your body), Stance (where you stand in relation to the ball), Posture (Athletic stance, like a quarterback). Take full rehearsal swings (no ball) with each club. Get 100 swings in every day, whether you get to the course or not. If you want to start to play golf at home. Do the following: make up a chipping game with targets that you must hit with in a certain number of shots (create your own par). If your home is not available to do this, find the nearest park that you can walk to and work on your game.

Key 3: Get "Less Bad" by spending 15mins-1 hour working on your game at home or a nearby park on days you can't get to the course.

We purposely did not mention actually playing golf on the course. We know that you love golf enough, that you will find a way to play as often as possible. However, we believe that the 3 keys above will help you to enjoy those days a lot more. Be sure to get to the course early when you do play and spend time on the practice areas to increase the odds of an excellent round.

Please let us know how you are getting "LESS BAD!" Share your observations, experiences and lessons learned about the game with us in the comments, twitter, facebook, Instagram, email, or phone.

If you would like help building your own game improvement package, we would be glad to help bring confidence to your game ("LESS BAD!") through proper training and proper equipment.

Get Your Confidence On Rory's Level: 3 Improvements You Can Make Today.

My heart is still pumping like crazy from that exciting finish last night at the PGA Championship. How about you? The drama on a Sunday night could not have been any better.  After the thrill of the birdies faded, and after Rory turned the lights out on the competition, you start to reflect on his sizzling summer of golf. One of the main observations as I have watched Rory over the years is his consistent improvement from one season to the next. One of the most obvious improvements is the fact that he is now completely jacked in comparison to when he first burst on to the golfing scene (see photo).  The other changes are a little less obvious, but if you listen carefully to him in his interviews and watch closely on the course you will start to pick them up as well.

Here are the 3 areas that Rory has worked on to get his confidence on another level. The cool part? You can copy these 3 starting today:

1) Improved Body Language
Rory has been playing golf since he was 2 years old. He has put in his 10,000 hours (See Malcolm Gladwell's Outliers for more info) of training to achieve mastery in his field. As long as we have had the opportunity to watch him compete, he has never appeared to lack for confidence. However, Rory tells a different story. We all remember his hooked tee shot into the cabins at Augusta and the triple bogey that led to an 80 instead of a green jacket. Rory describes his body language that day as, "I was uncomfortable. It's not like me to look at my feet when I walk. My shoulders were a little rounded. I was very insular." After that point he decided to change his focus and always keep his head up no matter what was happening. He often focuses his gaze just above the faces in the crowd. Rory says it will improve how you feel about yourself as well as improve your posture and cause you to stick your chest out. These are great positions to be in to have great body language. An added side benefit? Your opponents will not gain a psychological sense that they are getting to you.

Rory Lesson #1: Keep your head up at all times to effectively display confident body language. It will have an impact on you and those around you.

2) Improved Body Fitness
This area has been the most obvious area that Rory has made incredible improvement. In 2010 Rory hired Steve McGregor as his trainer. They immediately discovered imbalances in Rory's strength and began to develop a variety of workouts to provide a more balanced physique. There is not any special secret to their routine. He works out 3-5 days per week, although he has definitely amped it up over the last few months.  They do a variety of cardio, weights and exercises changing the routine every 6-8 weeks. The main reason Rory has really taken his workouts to a high level was explained by his trainer: "Rory's never lacked for confidence, but there's a lot of scientific evidence that links being strong and physically fit with self-confidence and psychological well-being.  Those are great things to have on the course."

Rory Lesson #2: Start working out today using a variety of methods. It will improve your athleticism and also your confidence.

3) Improved Mental Training
This area is probably the least obvious area but also is likely the most important. Rory's mental training really came to light in his interview at the Open Championship. At the conclusion of his final round he said he only had two keys the entire week, "Process and Spot."  These two trigger words were vital for Rory to keep his focus and to play his best.  His focus on process means that he would follow the same routine from the moment he woke up in the morning until the moment he went to sleep. The best athletes in the world (at least that stay the best) are known for their discipline, delayed gratification and daily routines. Another key process area would be in his pre-shot routine, the moment he grabs his golf club until he makes his stroke, is all programmed down to a fraction of a second. His focus on a spot is a key that many golfers and athletes will use to help the mind focus in on a clear target while eliminating everything else from the mind. This key is an amazing mental training principle that can help a player of any ability level to play better golf.  When the mind has a clear picture of the intended target, the body will do an incredible job of taking care of the rest. Rory thought these two words were so important that he used them to win a major. Most professionals have a mental skills trainer to help in this area, now you can too. The one that I would recommend is Joshua Medcalf of Train2BClutch. Joshua has worked with top college and high school golf programs across the country.  He is very engaging with his clients on twitter and does excellent work. Tell him that we sent you.

Rory Lesson #3: Start to develop your mental training. Start by simply having a clear "Spot" (target) and focusing your energy on the "Process" (routine).

Take these 3 tips to the golf course or try and apply them in any area you are working to improve. If they have worked for Rory, I am sure you will be happy with the improvements that you start to make as well.

Please let us know how your "process" is coming along. Share your observations, experiences and lessons learned on the course with us in the comments, twitter, facebook, Instagram, email, or phone.

If you would like help building your own game improvement package, we would be glad to help bring confidence to your game through proper training and proper equipment.

What is a "Gap" Wedge exactly? Do I need one?

Here is an example of a standard Gap Wedge (also called an "A" wedge)
I was first introduced to the gap wedge when a fellow golfer said, "I just love my 52 degree. I use it for almost everything within 100 yards and especially when chipping around the green." I had to learn more about this magical club.

I found out that most sets come with irons through PW and then many players will add in a sand wedge. The problem is that a pitching wedge is 48* of loft and a sand wedge is 56*.  This leaves a pretty big gap in clubs. I bet you can guess where the name came from. You bet, the gap wedge fills the gap left between those two clubs.

To me the more important part is how much easier I can control the gap wedge from 100 yards and in.  Give it a try and see if it becomes your "go to money" club for your short game.

Lucky for you we have our end of the month clearance sale on gap wedges right now. Starting on auction at just $0.99! Pick one up here:

March Madness…Golf Style!

Tag yourself in this photo for a chance to win a free round of golf

How did you like the Accenture Match Play tournament this past weekend? I think it was awesome, definitely one of my favorite events. I love all the upsets and excitement that the tournament brings - it reminds me of March Madness.

For us Mid-Westerners, this time of year finally gets us back into golf mode. Sure, we've been putting in our living rooms and going to indoor simulators, domes and winter events, but there is nothing quite like days that finally break into golfing temperatures, even if there is still a bit of snow on the ground. We get out our clubs and start swinging outside on our driveways or find a few grass patches where we can practice chipping. We are finally on the verge of the first round of the year! Last year we were quite lucky, in the twin cities area at least, to be able to get out and play as early as March 14th. I don’t think any of us see that happening this year but here is to hoping we can get out sometime before April.

Finally, be sure to connect with us on facebook this month. As part of March Madness, we are giving away free rounds of golf, T-shirts and more! Also, check us out online to sign up for our newsletter; now you'll be able to keep up with all our events - this month and for the upcoming season! You can also take our survey to get all set up with an awesome set of clubs for cheaper than a new driver or iron set in the stores!

‘Tis the season..

...to be jolly if you are a golf nut. The PGA has begun their West Coast swing, the Orlando golf show is going strong, and many other golf shows are going to be following suit throughout the country. It’s that time of year where every golfer the world over is thinking about the changes that they are going to make for the new season. From a new driver or bag overhaul, to a new game changing tip, or maybe, even a complete swing overhaul. The swing overhaul thing seems to be working pretty good for Tiger so far this year as it appears that his game is starting to resemble glimpses of the Tiger that we grew to love watching, the Tiger who tore up every course he walked. The debate over who is better is gaining a lot of momentum: the “Old Guys” (yes Tiger has now joined the ranks) vs. the “Young Guns.” The Farmer’s Insurance Open has proved to be a showcase of both sides. How exciting is it to see Daly, Mickelson and Woods all in the hunt? I guess I must be getting old, because to me that is really exciting. Who are you pulling for this year? The old guys or the young guns?

Come and visit us at the Minnesota Golf Show on February 18th-20th and we can discuss the exciting state of golf, and more importantly, your game in 2011. Because, after all, this is YOUR year!

i'd rather be golfing...

I am generally a positive person and have a positive outlook on life, golf and pretty much everything else. That all goes away in the bitterly cold month of January! Here in Minneapolis, MN (I'm actually in the 'burbs) the month of January just pretty much stinks in my opinion. All the cool things about winter just generally start to annoy me right about now. Case in point the light dusting of snow on my car this morning really ticked me off. I won't go into detail on that but instead I would like to discuss some of the things I do when I am not golfing but wish I was.

Here is my list in no particular order.

  • Grab random objects to practice my grip (Yard sticks, broom handles, spatulas)
  • Make slow motion swings in the living room (so far I have had a lamp broken and almost my TV doing this as sometimes my slow mo swings start to speed up for some reason)
  • Practice my swing out in the garage (There is a hole in my garage door as a result of this
  • Practice putting on the carpet (pretty harmless so far)Work on my stance using the tiles in the kitchen
  • Work on my turn / swing in front of the bathroom mirror (My wife finds these motions strange and somewhat annoying but she puts up with me. I mean after all our whole garage has been converted to a golf shop. How many wives would allow that?)
  • Go out in the driveway and swing the speed stick (Record so far is 115 MPH - not sure how accurate it is, but hey I'll take it!)
  • Hit birdie balls around in the park across the street
  • Chip into nets, buckets, and at trees (Try to avoid neighbors houses, cars, kids etc)
  • Try to do the Tiger Woods golf ball tapping trick (My record is about 50 in a row right now)
  • Play Tiger Woods golf (Fun but just not the same - I heard he's not on the cover of his newest game but instead a hole from Augusta has replaced him...interesting)
  • Watch golf on TV (Sometimes makes it worse)
  • Sell golf clubs for Holen1 Golf (Helps keep me connected to the game and meet lots of other cool golf nut type people)
  • Try not to think about golf (Doesn’t really work)
  • Annoy my wife by talking about how much I want to go golfing, or how I can’t wait 'til the snow melts, or how we should move to a warmer climate so I don’t have to annoy her about not being able to golf
  • Play Fantasy Golf (You should join my league by the way)

What do you do when you can’t get out golfing?

this is YOUR year...

We would like to devote this blog to you and your game. As the new season is already in swing, I am sure you are starting to dream of all the exciting things that will happen for you out on the fairways and greens this year. As golfers we tend to approach the new golf season with many of the same feelings that we get each time we step up to the first tee before a round of golf. There is a sense of excitement, nervousness, expectation, and wondering if this could be the best one yet. As you step up to the first tee for the first time this year we would like to be there with you providing the best equipment at the best price to make this your best year yet.

Here are several ways that we would like to help you get there. First we would like to get you set up with the proper equipment, which is after all our specialty. We have been in the golf business in some form for the last 7 years as coaches, players and sales reps. We know our stuff when it comes to equipment. With that said, we also know that no one knows your game better than you do. It is our belief that performance is the biggest factor and the key to improved play. If the club works for you and you hit it well, like the feel and look then that is the club for you. So what we offer with every single club or set that we sell is a 30 day guarantee. Try the club out to make sure you like it and, if you do, great (most people do). If not, bring it back and we will get a club that works better for you - if we can’t find something that will be a good fit we will refund your money completely. We are not satisfied until your game is improving.
The second way that we would like to help you improve your game is by posting weekly “play better” tips every Saturday. Think of it as your weekly golf workout. If you follow the majority of these tips throughout 2011 you will see progress in your game. I am going to be following the plan myself and would like to hear about how your workouts are going and will be sure to post my progress as well. You can find these tips on our facebook page: www.facebook.com/h1golf or linked on our website as well.

So there you have it, we are all about you this year because we believe that this is going to be your year. The year you exceed all of your expectations. Together, we can make it the best one yet.

a resolution you will keep

Do you have a bad track record with New Year's resolutions? I know I did until about 4 years ago when I finally committed to my first successful resolution. It was to start drinking coffee. Guess what? I am still drinking coffee and am up to about 1 pot a day now. Pretty good don't you think? When the next year came along I was still so impressed with myself that I committed to playing more golf for my next resolution. You guessed it, kept that one with the greatest of ease as well. The following year I decided I was going to really buckle down and work a bit harder, so I committed myself to watching more golf on TV. I had now officially 3-peated in New Year's resolutions after going about 0 for 15 in previous years. This year I am fully committing myself to becoming a great Fantasy Golf player. I figure it is important to build upon my prior successes. So with that, I ask you to join me in my pursuit of perfection. Four years straight of keeping my New Year’s resolution. I think we can all manage 30 minutes a week, or even less depending what you put into it, to play a little Fantasy Golf. The other great thing about it is that, at least for those of us stuck in the Midwest, you start to whet your golf appetite a little bit and don’t drive everyone else crazy because you can’t stand not playing 18 holes one day longer. Remember this is your year! So there you have it, thanks to reading this blog you will now have a resolution that you can keep. Guaranteed or your money back…oh wait it’s free so never mind.
